Swimming Sports.

Today is the day of swimming sports laps of strokes 25 to 50 meters. We are racing for the title of representing our school in the swimming sports these are the strokes we are racing in.

25m Breaststroke
25m Backstroke
25m Freestyle

Then there are the 50m

50m Breaststroke
50m Backstroke
50m Freestyle
50m Butterfly.

I competed in 25m Freestyle and 25m Backstroke. 25m races were going first.
Now after waiting for so long it is time for my race 25m Freestyle. In the water getting ready 3 2 1 and were off. Once we finished I realized  that I had come first hooray but Sadly 25m don't go to zones but that OK. After a little more waiting it was my next race 25m Backstroke. We jump into the water getting ready steady Go. Were off again the Butterfly's left as soon as I started near the end and done.
Once again I came first that great. After all the 50m races it was time to go. Now that is the end of Swimming Sports.

My first time being a leader.

Hola welcome back to Blog with me.
This week I am telling you all about my second week at school lets get into it.

Friday 8 of February 2019
It was lunch time and we had been told the we would be running sports games today I am a year 7 this year. Since I am a year 7 I don't need to do the games the year 7 are looking after there team but the year 8 have to play and look after the game. During lunch we were getting into our teams. Once we found and got into our teams the year 7 leaders were given a list of where they had to take there team.
The first one we did was doge-ball it wasn't a completion it was just to have fun but then right after that game I had to go to the dentist.  After I left the Dental van I missed 3 games but that's OK I played the rest of the games till the end of the day. But I must say I am excited for this new school year.

Come get then before they all run out or Spin out

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about design and the big question was; How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product?

First we learned what STEAM stood for.
S for Science
T for Technology
E for Engineering
A for the Arts
and M for Maths
Then we were given challenges. The first to make a chair using newspaper, string and straws that was able to hold a figure made out of multi-link blocks.
Then; make a table that was able to balance MnMs for the team. We were much better at the second challenge because we knew what we did wrong in the first challenge and learned what we had to do differently.

In Literacy we learned to write up science experiments and to write a technology report using the design process of ask, imagine, plan, create, improve and share.
Technology            Static Electricity

Our next step was to form teams and ask ourselves the big question again.
How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product? Our aim was to create enough products or experiences and sell it to raise money for charity.

My team made a colour spinner it was easy to make but the hardest part was the colouring. we had a bit of trouble with the string but we used rubber bands and found a way to make it better and ready to sell. Here is a picture of what we did and made at the Market.

Reflection

My highlight from this PBL was when we sold out faster than we thought that gave us more time to go and look around the Market. Also my sister was the last one to buy one so I can play with t at home to.

Next time I would make more because we sold out quicker than we thought and when we sold out when we were all cleaning up people were wanting to buy some but we didn't have anymore.

Would you buy our spinners?

The day we have all been working for...

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about cultural stories and the big question was;
What is the significance in the 21st Century of our Cultural stories?

First we brainstormed what culture is and came up with lots of ideas.
Culture is your family history and traditions that you share with your love ones and where your from.
Then we thought about our own culture and talked to our parents about our traditions and heritage. I wrote a post about my family and things we like to do.

In Literacy we read and discussed myths and legends from around the world then we concentrated on Maori legends. I read Maui and the Big Fish. I retold the Legend of Maui and the Sun.

We made a performance about the story Battle of the Mountains. Some students wrote the script, some students took on the job of making all the artwork, some worked hard on organising the music and others took on the role of bringing the story alive with dance and drama.

I helped with doing the music and sound affects.

I think the show might impact on others by they can learn about what they can see like the Battle of the Mountains.

What I learned about working with others was that everyone can play different instruments and they can play at different speeds.

My family Culture

My family Culture

Hi I am Makayla and I am here to talk about my family culture on my blog.
Our learning focus for Project Based Learning the term is about Culture.
Today I will be telling you about my family Culture. My Dads family side is from the Cook Island maori and my Mum is from New Zealand so I go both ways. The Cook Islands have many fascinating traditions and ceremonies.

You may know of the drums, well they are not just for making music they are sometimes used for communication one drum might mean a meeting between tribes and villages others may mean to celebrate a holiday.

Another is the frangipani flower

In the Cook Islands women where the frangipani flower to show if they are married or not. If you ever visit and you see a woman wearing a frangipani on there right ear they are married but if they are wearing it on there left they are single.

There is also a tradition called the maeva nui competition it is like kapa haka it is a competition between island and to see who is the best it happens once a year in the month of May.

Another thing that Cook Islanders use instead of perfume and deodorant they used flowers they use any in the season they call these ei that means it is a garland it could be and head garland which might mean a hat of flowers like a necklace a flowers same as a bracelet and they still use it now.

Interesting facts: If you were thinking of buying any part of this island think again because it is family owned and land is not for sale.

I hope you enjoyed learning about my Dad side of my family culture.
Please let me know in the comments what your family culture is.
