Reading Task Term 2

Today I am going to be sharing with you my Reading task for this week. Here is my goal for this week. Goal:  "Making connections between and across texts."
Here is my task for this week.

For reading this week I read:
Text 1: Te Tiriti o Waitangi

Text 2: Keeping Promises

My thinking:
Make connections between and across at least two texts and general knowledge to expand meaning and pose questions
The new learning I now have are:

That the English Government didn’t translate what was on the Treaty properly and that the two cultures would have a completely different understanding on what they were signing. When it came down to the English people promised stuff for the Maori it wouldn’t always go as planned

2 Questions I have are:
How is it back in 1840’s how did the English know what the Maori wanted because no one would be able to understand them?
How did they when writing the Treaty know what each other wanted. How did they translate it?

Use prior knowledge to connect to at least two texts
The prior knowledge I had for Text 1 was:
I knew that for over 500 years Maori had Aotearoa to themselves.

I knew that the Maori asked for protection from the King of England.

The prior knowledge I had for Text 2 was:
The treaty of Waitangi was a sign of peace and the Queen of England the 2nd came and visited NZ wear a fur coat gifted to her by one of the tribes chefs

The treaty of waiting had some typos and that one word in English didn’t mean the same thing in Maori so that led to confusion when it came to getting what the Maori wanted and what they thought signed.

Make connections between at least two texts and own life experiences
2 things that I could relate to from my own life experience in Text 1 was:
It is hard to have something that is yours for so long and now is yours but then at the click of a button it is taken from you just like that.

How there can be miss understandings and some things not going as planned with what some people promised but 2 were thinking of something different. It is hard to forgive and forget and that is something I have had to face.

2 things that I could relate to from my own life experience in Text 2 was:
I guess how this text could relate to me in my own life experience is that keeping promises when you think you getting something but 2 people are thinking of different things and when it comes down to that promise it looks as if they broke it without knowing.
Taking something from me that was mine but nothing in return.

This was my Task for this week I hope you enjoyed reading it. It was very interesting reading about The Treaty Of Waitangi and how much New Zealand has grown since then. I hope you enjoyed. Until Next time. Bye!

What do you know about the Treaty Of Waitangi?

  1. Hi Makayla
Wow that is some very descriptive writing, I felt like I was reading some of my high school child's work. Its not very nice when a promise is broken, but often that is because both parties didn't understand what the promise was. Keep up the good work. Are you enjoying working from home?
